Pittsburgh sophomore quarterback Mason Heintschel suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during the second half of a 35‑33 victory over Virginia Tech on Friday night, ending his 2026 season, the Associated Press reported.
Coach Pat Narduzzi posted on X on Saturday, confirming the injury and expressing sympathy, saying, "We’re heartbroken for Mason, but he’s a resilient young man. We know he’ll attack his recovery with the same determination he brings to our building every day."
Heintschel was tackled while scrambling, his leg pinned behind him, and remained in visible pain before being helped off the field on crutches. He had thrown for 14 touchdowns with only one interception before the injury. Transfer quarterback Holden Gernier replaced him, completing 78 yards and a touchdown, and is expected to start the upcoming game against North Carolina on Oct. 10.
