Fresh clashes between Kuki and Naga communities in Manipur’s hill districts left nine people dead, officials said, prompting Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh to call for peace and restraint.
What happened
The violence began on Friday night when a 22‑year‑old mother of five was shot dead in the Kuki‑dominated Chassad village of Naga‑majority Kamjong district. The killing sparked an exchange of fire between armed groups that continued into Saturday morning, killing a 42‑year‑old man and torching ten houses. Subsequent attacks on Saturday resulted in the deaths of two Naga village guards, a third civilian, and two men in Ningchou village near the India‑Myanmar border. In Ukhrul district, a 40‑year‑old man was killed when militants opened fire on his car. Additional armed confrontations were reported at Makui Ashang and Tapon villages in Kangpokpi district.
What the reports add
The New Indian Express noted that prohibitory orders under Section 162 of the BNSS have been imposed in Chassad to curb further violence. It also reported a claim by the Working Committee JTC Manipur that a 52‑year‑old villager, Ajinbou R, was beheaded and that his severed head was demanded for a dignified burial.
What was said
In a social‑media post, CM Singh said, "I condemn the killing of innocent civilians and the violence… I have instructed the authorities concerned to take immediate and effective steps to control the situation, restore peace and order and ensure the safety and security of all citizens." The outlet attributed the statement to Singh.
How it came about
Security forces were rushed to the worst‑hit Kangpokpi and Kamjong districts after the initial killing, officials said, in an effort to restore order and prevent further escalation.
