Katie Boulter progressed to the second round of the Japan Open in Osaka after a rain‑delayed match against home favourite Himeno Sakatsume. Boulter led 6-3 3-1 when play was suspended on Monday, resumed on Tuesday and completed a 6-3 6-1 victory.
She said to the Independent, “Yesterday was a tough spot to end at… I had to have the same mindset again today and just try to get over the line and focus on getting through the match.”
The win sets up a second‑round clash with Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic. Boulter, who lost in the Wuhan Open first round, has been overtaken as British No 1 by Sonay Kartal.
