Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen withdrew from the Wuhan Open on Monday, citing a shoulder injury, a day after capturing her first WTA title in two years at the China Open in Beijing.
What happened
Zheng announced her withdrawal on Monday, just hours after the singles main draw began in Wuhan. The decision followed her victory over Russia’s Mirra Andreeva, 7-5, 6-4, in the China Open final on Sunday.
What the reports add
The Associated Press report notes that Zheng said she had played a “demanding stretch of tennis” over the past month and a half, including the U.S. Open, the Billie Jean King Cup and the China Open, leaving her body “very fatigued.” The same report adds that both Zheng and Andreeva were replaced in the Wuhan draw by lucky losers – Camila Orosio for Zheng and Anna Bondar for Andreeva.
What was said
“Since returning from injury … I have played a demanding stretch of tennis over the past month and a half, competing at the U.S. Open, the Billie Jean King Cup, and the China Open. My body is feeling very fatigued after this intense run of matches,” Zheng said in a statement released by the WTA.
“I’ve been through a very tough year,” Zheng added during her trophy presentation, before singing a pop song for the crowd.
How it came about
Zheng entered the China Open as a wildcard ranked No. 54 and lifted the title, ending a two‑year title drought after an elbow injury had dropped her ranking to 160 earlier in the season. The shoulder issue now forces her to miss the Wuhan 1,000‑level event, though she expressed intent to return next year.
