Josh Brolin told The Independent that the prosthetic makeup used to create Cable in the 2018 film Deadpool 2 was so intense it triggered a panic response.
What happened
During filming, Brolin said technicians covered his head in clay to make a mold of his face. As the material hardened, it became hot and began to muffle his hearing. He wrote in a notebook, “Mild panic,” describing the moment he heard a distant voice reassuring him he would be fine.
What the reports add
The Independent reported that Brolin explained the process in detail, noting that most people cannot endure the procedure. He also recalled that the experience made him feel his hearing was fading as the clay set.
What was said
"When they do it, it gets hot and it hardens and then slowly you start to lose your hearing," Brolin told The Independent. "I remember hearing a voice – even though it was close, it sounded really far away, and it was like, ‘You’re gonna be fine,’ and they’re holding your hand and all that kind of stuff."
How it came about
Brolin, who first appeared on screen as a child in The Goonies (1985), has played a range of roles, including Thanos in the Marvel Avengers saga. He said he still feels nervous before new projects, a sentiment he linked to a comment from Jack Nicholson about set anxiety. His next film, the survival thriller Whalefall, is scheduled for release on 16 October.
