Gail’s bakery to open next to Brixton tube station on Oct. 16

The new outlet will replace a vacant Chopstix site and serve commuters from 6 am.

Gail’s bakery chain announced that its latest shop will open on Brixton Road next to the Victoria line station on Friday, 16 October, according to Standard. The outlet will occupy the former Chopstix premises, which have been empty since autumn 2025, and will open at 6 am to cater to commuters.

The Brixton station handles roughly 55,500 passenger entries and exits each day, and the new bakery is expected to create 15 to 20 jobs across various roles. Gail’s, known for its cinnamon buns and sourdough loaves, charges £4 for a bun and £4.90 for a loaf, prices that some locals have called “insanely overpriced.”

Local reaction has been mixed. Independent businesses in Brixton are already under pressure, and the owner of the former Brixton News stand, Pritesh Patel, said Transport for London demanded an £85,000 annual rent for the site, more than double his previous rate. Residents have voiced concerns that the bakery contributes to gentrification, with one comment warning that “Brixton is losing its soul to gentrification.”
