James McAvoy says ‘Split’ is the only film that still pays him regularly

The actor explained the film’s modest budget and huge box‑office helped generate early residuals.

James McAvoy told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that M. Night Shyamalan’s 2016 horror film Split is the only movie that still provides him regular residual checks. He said he sometimes receives “a couple 100 quid” or even “25 cents” checks, noting the cost of posting a 25‑cent check can exceed its value.

McAvoy estimated the film’s production budget at about $6 million and its advertising spend at roughly $30 million. He said the movie earned $40 million in its opening weekend, turning a profit and generating the first residual check at the end of that weekend.

The film grossed $138.29 million domestically and $140.16 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $278.45 million. McAvoy also praised Shyamalan’s preparation, saying the director maximised efficiency on the modest budgets of Split and its sequel Glass.
