Hallgrimsson says surviving Israel fixture would be a win for Ireland

The Republic of Ireland will play Israel behind closed doors in Serbia after a heated press conference and protests in Ireland.

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson told the Independent that simply surviving the current international camp and emerging undamaged from the Nations League tie with Israel would feel like a massive win for his side.

The home fixture is set for a closed‑door match in Backa Topola, Serbia, after widespread protests in Ireland over the decision to play the games.

A pre‑match press conference was cut short when Israeli journalists and Irish officials clashed over non‑football questions and accusations of racism toward Irish players, which the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) press officer called "completely untrue".

FAI representatives later asked Israeli media to leave an embargoed briefing intended only for the Irish press, forcing the briefing to be moved elsewhere in the building.

Captain Dara O’Shea remained in London because of the imminent birth of his child, though Hallgrimsson said he could still be included in the squad.
