Ethiopia’s renewed fighting pits former allies against Abiy Ahmed’s government

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government recaptured Mekelle on Oct. 4, 2026, after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) withdrew, according to the Independent.
What happened
The federal army moved into Mekelle, the capital of the northern Tigray region, following a renewed offensive that broke the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement. The government announced a six‑month caretaker administration to restore services, aid displaced people and prepare for elections. At the same time, the TPLF joined a coalition of six other opposition groups – including the Amhara Fano National Movement and the Oromo Liberation Army – that formed in September to overthrow the Prosperity Party.
What the reports add
The Independent notes that the rebel alliance, called the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, combines political opposition with military strength, a point also made by International Crisis Group analyst Magnus Taylor to the Associated Press. Taylor warned that parallel campaigns could stretch federal forces across several fronts, though he said it remains unclear whether the groups can sustain coordinated action.
What was said
Magnus Taylor told the Associated Press that the alliance “combines political opposition to Abiy with military strength.” The Independent also quoted the Ethiopian government’s statement that the caretaker administration would “restore services, help displaced people return and prepare for elections.”
How it came about
Abiy Ahmed won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for ending the 1998‑2000 war with Eritrea, but the two countries later fought together against Tigrayan forces. The 2022 Pretoria peace deal ended the 2020‑2022 civil war that killed an estimated 500,000 civilians, according to Ghent University researchers. Renewed fighting in late September 2026 revived old tensions, leading to the federal seizure of Mekelle and the formation of the seven‑group opposition alliance.
