The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) announced on Monday that it has withdrawn from the INDIA alliance, saying it will pursue an independent political path.
What happened
The DMK issued a statement saying it walked out of the alliance after what it described as the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) chief B Manickam Tagore and other Congress leaders – Girish Chodankar and Praveen Chakravarthy – repeatedly made remarks that damaged the alliance’s unity and public image. The party said the Congress had breached alliance ethics in pursuit of ministerial positions, citing the Congress’s support for Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s government formation in May.
What the reports add
The statement, supplied to PTI, also accused Congress cadres of acting as a “sleeper cell of another party” and warned Tagore against baseless allegations about the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The DMK claimed its public support has risen after shedding what it called “political liabilities,” pointing to recent by‑election results as evidence.
What was said
“Our path is an independent one,” the DMK said, adding that Congress leaders should focus on their own alliance dynamics. It also warned that continued attacks on the DMK would have “serious consequences.”
How it came about
The rift follows the Congress’s backing of Vijay’s government in May and earlier tensions over the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. The DMK’s move echoes its past role in anti‑BJP coalitions during two parliamentary elections.
