FRC fines Deloitte £6.05m over audit failures of Go-Ahead subsidiaries
The Financial Reporting Council reduced a proposed £11 million penalty after Deloitte cooperated and admitted its audit shortcomings.

Deloitte has been fined more than £6 million by the UK accounting watchdog for audit failures involving transport group Go‑Ahead, the Financial Reporting Council said on Thursday.
What happened
The FRC said its investigation, launched four years ago, uncovered “numerous breaches” of audit requirements between 2016 and 2020. Deloitte failed to challenge two Go‑Ahead subsidiaries that wrongfully retained more than £30 million of public money, which the firm later released as profit instead of returning it to the government.
What the reports add
Both the Independent and the Evening Standard reported the same sequence of findings, noting that the regulator originally considered a £11 million fine but reduced it to £6.05 million because of Deloitte’s cooperation and admissions.
What was said
Penrose Foss, executive counsel and executive director of investigations and enforcement at the FRC, said: “These breaches show a highly concerning pattern of failure,” as quoted by the Independent.
How it came about
The audit failures were discovered after Go‑Ahead’s Govia joint venture with French firm Keolis was stripped of the Southeastern rail franchise for a “serious breach of trust”. Go‑Ahead stopped the practice once the government identified the misuse, leading to a £23.5 million fine at that time.
