Official results released by the Czech Statistics Office show that opposition parties have outpaced Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's ANO (YES) movement in the first round of voting for one-third of the Senate seats, the Associated Press reported on Sunday.
All votes counted indicate ANO secured 13 candidates for the upcoming run‑offs, whereas broad pro‑Western opposition coalitions have 26 candidates moving forward. Of the five candidates who crossed the 50% threshold to win seats outright, none belong to ANO; four represent opposition parties.
The election concerns 27 of the Senate's 81 seats, with 22 still to be decided in run‑offs between the top two finishers in each district. The Senate, while less powerful than the lower house, plays a key role in constitutional amendments and the appointment of Constitutional Court judges.
In parallel local elections, independent candidates and groupings appear to be winning the majority of seats nationwide, a traditional outcome. ANO won in six regional capitals, two fewer than in the 2022 vote, and did not secure Prague.
