The former Manchester City youth player and England under‑18 captain Courtney Meppen‑Walter has died at the age of 32, Bury FC said on social media on Tuesday. The club said it was “deeply saddened” by the news and offered condolences to the footballer’s family and friends.
Meppen‑Walter, who was released by Bury last summer, had a career that included spells at Carlisle, Chorley, Stockport and Telford United. He was jailed in 2013 for causing the deaths of two people in a dangerous driving incident involving a high‑powered Mercedes C220. The crash, which took place in central Manchester, killed a Nissan Micra driver and his sister. Meppen‑Walter served half of a 16‑month sentence and was released from prison before a 22‑month driving ban was imposed in 2019.
Details of the circumstances of his recent death have not yet been released. Bury’s statement did not provide a cause or any further information.
