Burkina Faso launches first gold refinery to boost economic sovereignty

The new plant, with an initial capacity of 164 tonnes per year, marks a key step in the military‑led government’s push for resource sovereignty.

In Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso inaugurated its first gold refinery, Raffinor‑BF, on Monday. The ceremony was attended by President Ibrahim Traoré, who said the refinery would ensure that gold is extracted, processed, valued and certified within the country.

Traoré, who came to power in a 2022 coup, framed the move as part of a broader campaign to reduce dependence on Western states and companies. “Natural resources belong to the people,” he said, adding that they must improve living conditions while respecting the environment and social justice.

Regional context

West African governments are increasingly revising mining codes and restricting raw gold exports. Guinea and Ghana have recently tightened export rules, Mali is building a refinery with Russia’s Yadran Group, and Ivory Coast plans to open one next year. Burkina Faso, one of the region’s top gold exporters, has seen its sector disrupted by escalating extremist violence since the junta took power.

Refinery details

The plant sits on five hectares in the capital and can process 164 tonnes of gold annually, with a target capacity of 515 tonnes. Burkina Faso produced 94 tonnes of gold last year.

Implications for the gold market

Gold prices fell in global markets earlier this week, with spot gold dropping 3.3% to $4,146.51 an ounce. The refinery’s domestic processing could affect export flows and local pricing, although the impact on international markets remains to be seen.
