DWF Labs says Bitcoin ETF flows mirror price moves, not predict them
Analysis of 694 days of US spot Bitcoin ETF data shows flows react to price changes rather than drive them.
By Felo News Desk · Published
DWF Labs’ research released on Thursday indicates that daily flows in US spot Bitcoin exchange‑traded funds (ETFs) tend to follow price rallies and fall during sell‑offs, offering little insight into future price direction.
What happened
The study examined 694 trading days from the launch of US spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024 through October 2026. It found investors withdrew money in seven of the eight instances when Bitcoin fell at least 15%, while all nine comparable rallies attracted net inflows. The largest outflows occurred during two recent declines, with $6.9 billion pulled between October 2025 and February 2026 and $8.2 billion during the May‑June 2026 slump.
What the reports add
DWF reported a moderate correlation (0.54) between daily ETF flows and Bitcoin price changes over the preceding five trading sessions, but the correlation for the following five days was near zero (0.03). The firm estimated that about 20% of flows may be hedged via CME futures, though it could not confirm overlapping positions. A CoinShares analysis from June noted a 17% reduction in professional investors’ Bitcoin ETF exposure in Q1 2026, with hedge funds and brokerages accounting for most of the cut.
What was said
“ETF flows confirm moves; they don’t predict them,” DWF said in its report.
“The evidence points mostly to investors reacting to price, not driving it,” the report added.
“We don’t have a clear split on the exact buyers/sellers of the ETFs,” a DWF Labs spokesperson told Cointelegraph.
How it came about
The analysis builds on earlier Felo News coverage of spot Bitcoin ETF inflows on 2026‑10‑22, which highlighted $528 million net inflows as Bitcoin slipped below $85 k. DWF’s findings suggest that such inflows are reactive to price trends rather than a leading indicator.
