ASA bans first ads for oral GLP‑1 weight‑loss medicines
Simple Online Pharmacy and Pharmacy Online were barred from promoting oral GLP‑1 treatments after the ASA said the medicines were not authorised for public advertising.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled that ads for oral GLP‑1 weight‑loss medicines are prohibited because the products were not authorised by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and are prescription‑only. Simple Online Pharmacy ran a social‑media ad on June 1 inviting people to “join the waitlist” for an oral weight‑management treatment, while Pharmacy Online displayed pop‑ups urging users to “pre‑order” the oral Wegovy tablet.
The first oral GLP‑1 tablet for weight management received a prescription‑only licence on June 11, meaning it cannot be advertised to the public under UK advertising rules. The ASA therefore banned the Simple Online Pharmacy ad for promoting an unauthorised medicine and also prohibited Pharmacy Online’s ads for promoting a prescription‑only product.
Further rulings targeted MedExpress, Juniper and the Care Pharmacy for marketing prescription‑only medicines without naming the products directly, prompting the ASA to warn that the overall impression of an ad can still breach rules.
“The licencing of oral GLP‑1 medicines represents a significant development in treatment options but also new challenges for regulators,” said Catherine Drewett, investigations manager at the ASA. “These are powerful medicines so it’s important that ads don’t encourage people to seek treatment in ways that could put them at risk.”
