Angola Cables to upgrade Monet and SACS subsea links with Ciena equipment

The upgrade will add 800 Gbit/s client connections on the Monet system and improve flexibility on both cables.

Angola Cables announced on Tuesday that it will upgrade its two subsea cable systems – Monet and the South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) – with equipment from US networking firm Ciena, the companies said. The upgrade, which involves installing Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme optical technology at the cable landing stations, is intended to increase capacity for cloud and AI providers without laying new fibre.

Monet, a 10 556 km cable linking Boca Raton, Florida, Fortaleza, Brazil and Praia Grande, Brazil, will support 800 Gbit/s client connections after the upgrade. SACS, a 6 165 km line that runs from Sangano, Angola, to Fortaleza, already provides a direct Africa‑to‑North‑America route. Both cables currently carry data between Angola and the United States in about 130 ms.

Angola Cables CTO Adriano Caldevilla said the systems form a “critical digital bridge” linking Africa with the Americas and that demand from hyperscalers and cloud providers is accelerating. Ciena’s regional director Fernando Capella added that customers will be able to purchase bandwidth ranging from a single 100 Gbit/s link up to an entire fibre pair.
