Actor Alan Cumming told SiriusXM hosts Nicole Ryan and Ryan Sampson that he does not fully understand the plot of Marvel’s upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, where he will reprise his role as the teleporting mutant Nightcrawler. Cumming, who first played the character in 2003’s X2: X-Men United, said he was “absolutely terrified to say anything” about the film’s secretive production process.

During the interview, Cumming explained that when someone tried to explain a scene to him, he preferred to keep his knowledge limited. “And this man came and said, ‘So right now, Alan, these giant robots are blah blah’, and started to tell me the thing,” he said, adding that it was “one of the rare scenes when I was actually on the back lot and not in front of a blue screen.” He joked that he simply wanted to know where to point his camera and that he was “here to run around.”

He also recalled meeting Florence Pugh for the first time at the recent Emmy Awards, despite the two sharing screen space in the film. “I said, gosh, ‘It’s so funny. I’ve never met you, but like, you lay on top of me, or your body double did,’” Cumming laughed. Pugh, who plays former Red Room assassin Yelena Belova, replied that the reverse had happened: “Yeah, I lay on top of you as well, but it was your body double.”

Cumming noted that revisiting Nightcrawler after 23 years was “actually really great” and that he was surprised to be doing stunts and playing a superhero at 60. He said he had to squeeze his scenes into a tight schedule due to his commitments on the reality series The Traitors.

The film, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, will see the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and returning X‑Men characters unite against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. The cast also includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, Ebon Moss‑Bachrach as Ben Grimm and Paul Rudd as Scott Lang.
