Leslie Denise Wilson, 35, of Gadsden, Alabama, was charged with murder on Monday for the death of her 12‑year‑old daughter, who had cerebral palsy, according to prosecutors cited by WDBJ7.
Police say the child was discovered in her bedroom dehydrated, suffering from pneumonia and bearing marks on her body. Investigators found she weighed only 32 pounds and had live maggots in her diaper. The autopsy determined death from sepsis and ruled the case a homicide.
Major Crimes Division Detective Alec Burgess told a hearing that Wilson allegedly instructed the girl’s younger siblings to care for her despite insufficient food in the home. The criminal complaint alleges Wilson "did torture, willfully mistreat, cruelly beat or otherwise willfully mistreat" the girl between May 1 and June 17.
