OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Hugging Face co‑founder Clément Delangue addressed the United Nations Security Council on 23 September, warning that fast‑moving AI models could soon self‑improve, evade oversight and pose a risk to humanity.

Altman said, “We could lose control of the future to AI,” while Amodei added, “If managed poorly, I even believe that AI could be a risk to humanity as a whole.” Delangue echoed the concern, urging international cooperation.

The trio called for democratic processes and government involvement in AI governance, noting that decisions cannot rest solely with labs in San Francisco. French Foreign Minister Jean‑Noël Barrot presided over the session.

Canadian AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio, co‑chair of the UN‑created Independent International Scientific Panel, told the council the dangers are “real and imminent.”

In a separate statement at the UN General Assembly, former US President Donald Trump rejected a global scheme to control AI, describing the technology as “extraordinary” but urging caution.
