YouTube to label AI‑generated songs on platform, cites listener demand

The rollout begins on YouTube Music and will soon cover the main YouTube site, following similar moves by Apple Music, Spotify and Tidal.

YouTube announced on Wednesday that it will label songs created primarily with generative AI across its main website and YouTube Music. The company said in a blog post that listeners have asked for transparency as AI tools evolve. The labels are being applied using YouTube’s own detection systems and those of its music partners, with an expansion to the broader YouTube platform planned for later.

Apple Music, Spotify and Tidal have already pledged similar labeling schemes. Over the summer, groups including the RIAA, IFPI, the Grammys and SAG‑AFTRA urged the industry to adopt “AI‑Generated” or “AI‑Assisted” tags. IFPI CEO Vikki Oakley and RIAA chairman Mitch Glazier said fans want to know how generative AI is used in the music they hear.
