U.S. equities retreated on Wednesday, Oct. 7, after a record‑setting rally the previous day, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Standard & Poor’s 500 fell 0.2% to 7,801, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 341 points, or 0.7%. The Nasdaq composite also slipped 0.2% from its own record level.

Bond market pressure intensified as the yield on the 10‑year Treasury climbed to as high as 5.36% in the morning, up from 5.27% late Tuesday, before easing back to 5.28% later in the day. The Treasury sold $39 billion of 10‑year notes at an auction, with the median yield below 5.26%.

Oil prices continued to swing amid uncertainty over the war with Iran. Brent crude topped $102 per barrel in the morning, fell back during the session and settled at $100.20, down 0.4% from its peak. The International Energy Agency said its members supported accelerating inventory releases, especially diesel.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that “some very tough political choices stare us in the face,” citing high sovereign debt in France and Italy as a key risk. In Europe, France’s CAC 40 fell 1.2% as French bond yields rose.

Company‑specific moves included Worthington Steel slipping 6.9% after a weaker‑than‑expected quarterly report, while Constellation Brands rose 2.4% on stronger profit but gave a muted full‑year outlook. Analysts expect earnings per share growth of nearly 30% this season, according to FactSet.
