United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres said the world’s situation is worsening because the Security Council is paralysed, speaking to Al Jazeera on the opening day of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Guterres highlighted the Russia‑Ukraine war and the US‑Israel conflict over Iran as key drivers of a “dramatic geopolitical divide” that leaves vulnerable populations in “very dramatic situations”. He warned that violations of international law by major powers create an environment of impunity, allowing midsize powers to act unchecked.

The UN chief linked the two wars to rising food insecurity, fuel prices and global inflation, noting that disruptions to grain, fertilizer and energy exports through the Black Sea, the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al‑Mandeb exacerbate economic hardship, especially in developing countries.
