Ukrainian drones strike St Petersburg, killing one and injuring five

The attack damaged energy sites, disrupted airport operations and prompted Russian officials to report dozens of drones shot down.

A large‑scale Ukrainian drone raid on Russia’s St Petersburg on Sunday killed at least one person and injured five, the city’s governor said.

What happened

Governor Alexander Beglov said drones struck the St Petersburg oil terminal, the Ruchi oil depot and industrial warehouses in the Kolpino district. Fires broke out at the oil facilities and at a logistics hub operated by e‑commerce firm Ozon. A data centre owned by VK in the Leningrad region was also hit.

Beglov added that several residential buildings and two houses were damaged. The raid forced the city’s main airport to limit operations for safety reasons.

What the reports add

According to the Leningrad regional governor Alexander Drozdenko, 145 drones were shot down and about 20,000 residents lost electricity after the raid. State news agency TASS described the attack as the largest on the region in four years. Russia’s defence ministry claimed 1,015 Ukrainian drones were neutralised overnight.

What was said

Beglov told Al Jazeera that firefighters were battling blazes at the oil terminal, the depot and the warehouses. He said the airport was restricting flights “for safety reasons”.

Ozon confirmed a fire at its St Petersburg logistics hub, while VK said its data centre remained operational for users despite the attack.

How it came about

The raid follows President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent statements that Kyiv would resume striking Russian energy facilities after the United States announced a cease‑fire. Earlier this week Zelenskyy told the Financial Times that Ukraine was “done” with the energy cease‑fire declared by the United States.
