Seven civilians died as Russia bombed power facilities around Kyiv and five other regions, prompting emergency cuts.

Russia carried out a coordinated air campaign against Ukraine’s energy grid on Wednesday, striking power facilities around Kyiv and in five additional regions, Ukrainian officials said.

The attacks killed seven people, including a child, and forced the state grid operator Ukrenergo to impose emergency power cuts in the capital and three surrounding areas – the first such measure in Kyiv since spring.

Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi posted on X that Russia had "escalated to massive strikes on energy infrastructure." President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the death toll and noted that critical infrastructure was hit in five regions, with further damage reported in another five.

Forecasters warned of freezing nighttime temperatures in Kyiv in the coming days, raising concerns about the impact of the power outages.
