Northumbria Police said a black Audi A3 left the road at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland at about 1.30 pm on Tuesday, entered the River Wear and resulted in three teenage deaths.

Four occupants were in the vehicle when it went into the water. Search teams recovered the bodies of two teenage boys and a teenage girl later that evening. A 17‑year‑old boy managed to reach safety, was taken to hospital with non‑serious injuries and was subsequently arrested.
