Co‑creator and executive producer Brendan Hunt told Deadline that the "Ted Lasso" team had hoped to feature a posthumous appearance of Anthony Head’s character Rupert Mannion in the season‑four finale, but the plan was blocked.

Head, who died in June at age 72 from complications of pneumonia, had been a recurring figure as the former AFC Richmond owner. The fourth season wrapped on October 7, 2026, with several references to his character, and an on‑screen tribute reading “In Memory of Anthony Head.”

Hunt said, "We had an outside hope of bringing him back in the last episode. We were told that that was not going to be possible. So yeah, we had an idea for a little thing but it was not going to happen." Annette Badland, who plays pub landlady Mae Green, confirmed she was unaware of Head’s illness and assumed he would appear in the final season.

Because Head’s death occurred after filming concluded, the writers have not yet decided how to address his passing if the series is renewed for a fifth season. Hunt added, "I don’t know. I mean, he didn’t pass until after we shot everything, so we’ll have to figure that out when and if we get the chance to reconvene."

Head’s career included the iconic “Gold Blend Man” coffee ads and the role of Rupert Giles in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." His daughters, actresses Emily and Daisy Head, said he died peacefully surrounded by family.
