The Sydney Morning Herald announced on 30 September that it is accepting applications for its 12‑month 2027 trainee journalists program. The newspaper, Australia’s oldest continuously published daily, said the deadline is just before midnight on Sunday 18 October, and the traineeships will commence in February 2027.
Jordan Baker, the Herald’s editor, highlighted the paper’s history of training notable journalists such as Peter Hartcher, Ross Gittins and Jacqueline Maley, and noted recent graduates like Natassia Chrysanthos and Anthony Segaert. Executive editor Luke McIlveen added that the program is highly competitive and aims to bring “the best and brightest aspiring young journalists” into the newsroom.
