Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu presented the Swachh Andhra 2026 awards on Friday in Vijayawada, recognising municipal bodies and local institutions for sanitation and environmental work, according to two Deccan Chronicle reports.

What happened

The awards ceremony coincided with Swachh Diwas, marking Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) received the state‑level ‘Swachh City’ honour and a Vayu Sarvekshan‑Swachh Vayu award for cities with populations over three lakh. Guntur Municipal Corporation secured three category awards, while Mangalagiri‑Tadepalli also featured among the winners. In addition, a slate of municipalities, gram panchayats, schools, health centres and hostels were recognised in categories ranging from hotels to temples.

What the reports add

Deccan Chronicle’s first article highlighted the top three city‑level winners – Vijayawada, Guntur and Mangalagiri‑Tadepalli – and named the officials who accepted the awards: NTR district Collector and VMC Special Officer Dr G Lakshmisha and Commissioner H. M. Dhyanachandra for Vijayawada; Commissioner K. Mayur Ashok for Guntur. The second article listed the broader set of awardees, naming municipalities such as Tenali, Chilakaluripet and Bobbili, gram panchayats like K Moolapeta and Ravulapalem, schools including Nidamarru Zilla Parishad High School, and health‑care institutions such as Primary Health Centres at Pendurthi and Urban PHCs at Mangalagiri‑Indiranagar.

What was said

Commissioner H. M. Dhyanachandra told Deccan Chronicle that the twin awards recognised VMC’s sustained efforts to keep Vijayawada clean, green and pollution‑free, and stressed the importance of public participation, crediting sanitation workers, NGOs, volunteers and the media.

How it came about

The Swachh Andhra awards are part of the state’s annual Swachh Diwas programme, which aligns with the national Swachh Bharat mission to improve sanitation and waste management.
