Actor Stephen Graham was seen wiping away tears during a live interview on Capital’s breakfast show on 1 October, after presenter Jordan North played a surprise video message from his former teacher at Liverpool’s Everyman Youth Theatre, Gerry Potter.

Potter, also known as Gerry Pantomime, recalled directing Graham in his first play at the theatre, a production about a boy who contracted HIV. In the video he said he was “over the moon” to have been called an inspiration by Graham and praised the actor’s recent series Adolescence as “a work of genius”. Graham responded, “Wow. Oh man, you proper got me there. I wasn’t expecting that,” before thanking Potter for the tribute.

During the interview Graham was promoting his new book Letters to Our Sons, adding that “you don’t have to be a father to be an inspiration to someone”. The emotional moment was captured by Capital and shared on social media, highlighting the lasting impact of youth‑theatre mentorship.
