South Africa’s film and television rebate system remains stalled, prompting industry leaders to warn of significant job losses and reduced foreign direct investment, according to bizcommunity.com.
Representatives told Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition that the delays have already cost the country an estimated R822 million in production spend and 1,850 jobs in the current financial year. About R700 million in applications are still awaiting adjudication after meetings have been stalled for more than two years.
Quizzical Pictures, a local production house, cited a lost co‑production with an Australian company that involved the BBC, Stan and Amazon. The project, originally applied for in 2024, was expected to create around 300 jobs, generate over 1,000 opportunities and attract more than R100 million in foreign investment before collapsing due to the rebate backlog.
Odirile Mekwa, managing director of Quizzical Pictures, said the situation is eroding industry credibility and deterring international investors. He highlighted his own background in finance and previous roles at Primedia, EHM International, Deloitte and Sakhumnotho Group Holdings.
