Skydance says HBO Max and Paramount+ will eventually merge after $81 bn deal

The new Skydance entertainment group plans to combine HBO Max and Paramount+ over time, while keeping existing broadcast channels unchanged for now.

By Felo News Desk · Published

Skydance, the entertainment entity created by Paramount’s $81 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery that closed on Tuesday, announced that its two flagship streaming services – HBO Max and Paramount+ – will be unified into a single platform "over time," according to the company’s statement.

What happened

The merger, valued at $81 billion, closed on 6 October 2026. In the announcement, Skydance said the two services will continue operating separately for the immediate future, with no specific timetable for a combined offering. The company also noted that its broadcast and cable assets – HBO, TNT, HGTV, Food Network for Warner Bros. Discovery and CBS, MTV, BET, Nickelodeon for Paramount – will show no short‑term changes.

What the reports add

The Independent highlighted that the combined subscriber base exceeds 200 million, though the degree of overlap between HBO Max and Paramount+ remains unclear. It also quoted a Syracuse University professor, J. Christopher Hamilton, who said consumers are unlikely to notice price or programming differences in the short term.

What was said

"I do not believe the consumer is going to observe the difference in the organization, whether it be in raised subscription fees to HBO Max or raised subscription fees to Paramount+ or new programming rolled out in the first quarter," J. Christopher Hamilton told the Independent.

How it came about

Earlier Felo coverage explained that the merged studio will trade under the ticker SKYD after the deal closed (see Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery to be rebranded as Skydance). Separate Felo reports noted that the film divisions will retain their own logos (Skydance film heads promise separate Paramount and Warner Bros. slates after merger) and that senior executives will oversee marketing across the combined labels (Josh Goldstine appointed head of marketing for Warner Bros., Paramount and Skydance labels). The current streaming strategy follows those plans, keeping existing services unchanged while the company works toward a unified platform.
