An Independent analysis published on 11 October 2026 breaks down typical U.S. household expenses and shows that an annual salary of $100,000 – roughly $8,333 per month before taxes – falls short of average monthly outlays by $519.

The analysis, which draws on data from the Tax Foundation, Urban Institute, Edmunds.com, the Education Data Initiative, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Astound, BroadbandNow and Progressive, lists the following average costs: rent $1,890, federal taxes $1,175, groceries $1,050, health insurance $611, gas $192, electricity $154, cellphone $155, internet $81, car insurance $113, student loans $434, used‑car payment $572, and childcare $2,425. Adding these items totals $8,856 per month.

Industry voices echo the findings. Todd Vasos, CEO of Dollar General, told a recent retail conference that six‑figure earners are adopting shopping habits of lower‑income households as affordability tightens. Ashley F. Morgan, owner of Ashley F Morgan Law, PC, said in an email to The Independent that a $100,000 salary used to signal financial freedom, but “it doesn’t feel like as much money as I expected.” Financial adviser Steve Sexton added that many high‑income individuals are living paycheck to paycheck.

The report notes that the figures represent an average; not every household incurs every listed expense. Some families avoid childcare costs or do not own a car, while others face higher state or city taxes, such as in New York. The analysis also excludes discretionary spending on gifts, clothing, streaming services, entertainment or dining out.

Geographic variation widens the gap further. In major cities, rent, groceries and insurance are higher, stretching the shortfall beyond the national average. The Independent’s earlier coverage on 8 October 2026 highlighted the rising lifetime cost of the “American Dream,” underscoring the broader context of mounting financial pressures for middle‑class Americans.
