A Sharjah Court of First Instance sentenced a man to six months in prison after he swindled a father out of Dh1.515 million by promising to secure a college place for the son, Khaleej Times reported.

The defendant, introduced to the father by an acquaintance, first demanded Dh70,000 in cash, collected at a Sharjah shopping centre. He later met the father at a hotel, claiming he could register the son and asked for Dh445,000 for tuition and an additional Dh1 million as an investment. The son handed over the total amount the next day, but the promised admission never occurred and the money was not returned.

A woman linked to both parties testified that the defendant acknowledged receiving the funds. The court concluded the defendant used a false identity and fraudulent means, ordered him to pay court fees and referred the case to the civil court for further recovery.
