Rivian CEO says autonomy will enable radically new vehicle designs
At TechCrunch Disrupt, Rivian’s RJ Scaringe said autonomy will open design opportunities for personally‑owned driverless cars.

Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe told TechCrunch at the Disrupt conference that autonomous‑driving software will let the company create "dramatically different" vehicle designs beyond its current outdoor‑oriented SUVs and trucks. He said the technology will enable new form factors for personally‑owned autonomous vehicles and that he is "wildly excited about what the next 10 years look like in transportation" (TechCrunch).
Scaringe noted that a decade ago many automakers, including Mercedes‑Benz, Toyota and Hyundai, floated futuristic concepts such as pod‑like cars, "rooms on wheels" and even legged vehicles, but those ideas never left the prototype stage. He argued that the difference now is the presence of operational robotaxis in several cities and cheaper EV components, which together make the vision more realistic.
Rivian is currently scaling production of its R2 SUV, which began sales in June 2026 and is priced just under $60,000. The company has a driver‑assistance system that lets drivers remove their hands from the wheel while still monitoring the road. Scaringe said Rivian plans to upgrade that system to "point‑to‑point navigation" by the end of the year, still under driver supervision, and ultimately to full autonomy for robotaxi versions of the R2 that would run on Uber’s ride‑hail platform.
While Rivian’s autonomy program is still in early stages, Scaringe believes that once full autonomy is achieved, most of the driving will occur in personally‑owned vehicles rather than dedicated robotaxis. He highlighted that advances in battery and motor technology, driven by companies like Tesla and Rivian, have lowered costs and improved scalability, supporting his vision of a new mobility ecosystem.
