SAB marketing VP frames responsibility as creative catalyst
Vaughan Croeser, VP of Marketing at South African Breweries, argues that responsibility should inspire, not limit, creative work in alcohol advertising.

Vaughan Croeser, vice‑president of marketing at South African Breweries (SAB), told Bizcommunity that responsibility is not a restraint but a "creative catalyst" for brands, especially in the alcohol category.
He explained that marketers must balance ambition with accountability, challenging conventions while understanding the impact of their ideas. Croeser said responsible marketing should be integrated from the outset, not added as a checklist at the end of a campaign.
At SAB, the Responsible Marketing Committee – called The Collective – reviews creative concepts early, bringing diverse perspectives to ensure messages align with societal expectations. Croeser highlighted Carling Black Label’s #NoExcuse platform, now in its tenth year, as an example of a campaign that tackles gender‑based violence while evolving with public discourse.
He also noted SAB’s partnership with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), using the #NoExcuse WhatsApp line during football injury time to engage men in conversations about gender‑based violence.
During the COVID‑19 alcohol bans, Croeser said brands like Carling Black Label and Castle Lager shifted to promote public‑health behaviour, demonstrating how constraints can spark responsible innovation.
