Quartermaster Secures $140 Million Series B to Expand Maritime Data Network
The startup’s new funding will help deploy its SmartMast sensors on commercial vessels, offering real‑time data beyond the standard AIS system.

Arlington, Virginia‑based maritime‑intelligence startup Quartermaster closed a $140 million Series B round on 28 September 2026, according to an exclusive interview with TechCrunch. The round was led by software‑focused venture firm Insight Partners, with a significant contribution from defense‑focused Overmatch Ventures and existing backers such as First Round Capital. The remaining $40 million was supplied as a debt facility from investment bank Stifel.
Founder and CEO Neil Sobin said the round was pre‑empted by Insight and that the war in Iran and the resulting shipping chaos had sharpened demand for the company’s real‑time data. “I think we’ve gained huge amounts of conviction in the core thesis,” Sobin told TechCrunch. “A big part of the story for us this year was, events in the world drive that clarity and drive that conviction and urgency, and when you see that, you gotta seize the opportunity.”
Funding details
- ~$100 million of the Series B came from Insight Partners and Overmatch Ventures, plus existing investors.
- ~$40 million was a debt facility from Stifel.
Insight’s managing director Nick Sinai said the team’s execution and the strong demand for maritime data made the investment attractive. “Quartermaster is building a distributed network for the ocean, where reliable, real‑time data has been difficult to come by,” Sinai said.
Product and market
Quartermaster’s hardware, called SmartMast, mounts cameras and radios on a ship’s mast to capture and relay real‑time maritime data. The system records tens of gigabytes per day and offers governments, shipping companies and insurers more detailed awareness than the automatic identification system (AIS). Sobin noted that the startup is still discovering new uses for the data it collects.
The company spends considerable time engaging with maritime industry stakeholders beyond vessel owners, seeking ideas for new applications. “This is an ignored field. Mariners around the world have been ignored by technology for a really long time, and so when they meet us, they’re so excited,” Sobin said.
