Pakistan orders inspections of schools after roof collapse kills 35

Authorities have tasked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa education department with a three‑day safety audit of regional schools.

At least 34 children and a teacher died when a mud‑brick roof collapsed at Al‑Khair school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Thursday, Al Jazeera reported.

The provincial government ordered the education department to inspect all regional schools within three days, classifying them as safe, needing repairs, or potentially unsafe. The scope of the inspections – whether they will cover public schools, private schools, or both – remains unclear.

Police arrested Mohammad Khan, the school’s owner, after the structure was deemed weak; Peshawar Police Chief Saeed Ahmed said Khan told officers recent rains had weakened the roof. Families of victims say they warned Khan about leaking water before the collapse.
