Provincial education data released on Aug. 27 shows that 627 government schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are non‑functional, according to dailytimes.com.pk.

What happened

The annual school census recorded 411 non‑functional schools in the merged tribal districts and 216 in settled areas. North Waziristan accounted for the highest number (111), followed by Upper South Waziristan (99), Upper Kohistan (68), Kurram (53) and Khyber (27). Teacher shortages were cited for 226 schools, while 66 had no pupils, 28 were affected by disputes and 11 by encroachments.

What the reports add

The same source notes that a separate Education Department report in September found 3,796 KP government schools without electricity, including 2,183 in the merged districts. It also cites a Merged Areas Education Foundation estimate that more than 1.2 million children in the merged districts remain out of school. A July report highlighted that 191 community‑based education centres serving over 18,000 pupils faced uncertainty after 269 teachers went unpaid for more than 30 months.

What was said

Ali Rehman, a representative of the Pakistan International Human Rights Organisation, told journalists in Landikotal on Oct. 5 that only one per cent of girls in the merged districts complete secondary education, according to the article.

How it came about

The figures emerge ahead of a World Economic Forum analysis that argues Pakistan’s rapidly growing population is stretching an administrative system where decision‑making and resources often remain far from the communities they serve. The province’s Women Empowerment Policy 2026‑2030 places female literacy in the merged districts at roughly 17 per cent and flags shortages of female teachers, weak retention of girls beyond primary school and limited access to essential services.
