Scandinavian designers add three luxury towers to Manhattan skyline

Norm Architects, Snøhetta and Thomas Juul‑Hansen are behind three new luxury towers that reshape New York’s skyline.

Three new residential towers designed by Danish and Norwegian architects are nearing completion in Manhattan, according to the New York Post.

What happened

The 52‑story, 26‑unit building at 262 Fifth Avenue, developed by Five Points Development, is set to become the tallest all‑residential structure on Fifth Avenue. Prices for duplexes range from $7.5 million to $18 million. Oslo‑based Snøhetta designed a 70‑story tower at 50 West 66th Street on the Upper West Side, now the neighborhood’s tallest building after Extell finished construction in August. The top listing for that tower is $85 million. Copenhagen‑born Thomas Juul‑Hansen is the architect of a third project at 550 West 21st Street.

What the reports add

Norm Architects, based in Copenhagen, were tapped for the Fifth Avenue tower, which uses natural oak, Grigio Alpi stone and stainless‑steel finishes to create “vertical villas” without interior columns. Snøhetta’s Upper West Side tower features a hand‑set limestone and bronze‑glass façade, with balconies and a continuous “zipper of loggias” along the building’s length. The developer’s sales team is led by Nikki Field of Sotheby’s International Realty, who said there is “an appreciation for the minimalism, craftsmanship and exceptional quality of Norm Architects’ Scandinavian design.”

What was said

Peter Eland, a partner at Norm Architects, told the Post that “at extreme heights, natural materials become grounding elements and tactile finishes counter‑balance the panoramic views of Manhattan.” The Snøhetta firm described the 50 W. 66th St. tower as a “warm lantern” that will “glow as a new friend in the New York City skyline.”

How it came about

The projects reflect a growing trend of Scandinavian design entering the U.S. luxury market, building on earlier Felo News coverage of Scandinavian influence in New York fashion and design.
