Ex‑IMF director says Pakistan’s 2027 IMF‑World Bank chairmanship is ceremonial

Krishnamurthy V Subramanian stresses the chairmanship rotates annually and carries no extra voting rights.

Former International Monetary Fund executive director Krishnamurthy V Subramanian said Pakistan’s appointment as chair of the IMF and World Bank Boards of Governors for 2027 is a ceremonial role that rotates annually, not a position of real influence. He made the comment in a post on X after Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs announced that Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema would assume the chairmanship, the first time the country has held the post since 1953.

Subramanian wrote that the chairmanship is "protocol, not power" and explained that the role is limited to presiding over an annual meeting of member countries, without extra voting rights or loan‑granting authority. He contrasted the position with India’s G20 and BRICS presidencies, saying those forums set agendas and drive policy, whereas Pakistan’s role is limited to overseeing a single gathering.

Pakistan’s government described the appointment as a "historic milestone" that will allow the country to contribute to global economic discussions and facilitate dialogue among members. The announcement comes as Pakistan continues to rely on IMF programmes, including a $7 billion Extended Fund Facility and a $1.4 billion Resilience and Sustainability Facility, and expects around $1.2 billion in additional financing.
