OpenAI releases 370 new mathematical results, sparking expert concerns
The company announced hundreds of new results while facing criticism over the use of closed‑source models for frontier mathematics.

OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it had published more than 370 mathematical findings covering algebra, theoretical computer science and mathematical logic, according to the Guardian. The release follows the firm’s earlier claim of solving the Navier‑Stokes equation, a $1 million prize problem, last month.
The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton issued a statement saying it does not endorse the practice and warned that AI can generate arguments that humans cannot verify or take responsibility for. The institute called for a new paradigm that preserves human understanding in scholarly output.
OpenAI said it will work with the Institute for Advanced Study to give mathematicians a voice in shaping future research, but did not promise to halt testing advanced problems on its proprietary models. New York University mathematician Tristan Buckmaster, interviewed by the New York Times, warned that prompting AI with existing work could let the model complete results without proper attribution.
