Technical fault shuts 600 MW unit at North Chennai plant until Monday

The outage, combined with a 210 MW shutdown at Mettur, temporarily removed 810 MW of capacity, but officials say demand fell over the holidays.

Officials said a technical snag forced the 600 MW unit at Stage‑II of the North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS) offline from Friday and it is expected to resume generation by Monday.

The plant’s shutdown coincides with a temporary halt at the first 210 MW unit of the Mettur Thermal Power Station, reducing the state’s available capacity by 810 MW.

A senior TNPGCL official told the New Indian Express that power demand dropped from 19,560 MW on Oct 1 to 17,770 MW on Oct 2 because of holiday closures, limiting the impact on supply.

The unit will need at least 12 hours of gradual heating of metal components, pipes and boilers before it can restart, the official added.
