Gov. Gavin Newsom calls Trump “deranged” after Iran comment

Newsom slammed Trump’s remarks at a Nebraska rally, while the White House defended the president’s statement.

California Governor Gavin Newsom labeled President Donald Trump “deranged and dangerous” on X after Trump appeared to joke that Iran could “take out” Los Angeles or San Diego if it acquired nuclear weapons. The comments were made during a pre‑midterm rally in Nebraska, where Trump linked rising gas prices to the need to protect the United States from a nuclear‑armed Iran.

Trump told the crowd, “It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe… Let them take out Los Angeles, let them take out San Diego.” Newsom’s press office responded that the president was “advocating for an attack on 10+ million U.S. residents in two of America’s largest cities.” The governor also posted on X that the remarks were “not normal.”

White House communications director Steven Cheung replied on X, saying the media “freakout” was “not rooted in reality.” He argued Trump was merely stating that U.S. cities would be threatened if a nuclear‑armed Iran were not stopped, and claimed America is safer because of the president’s actions, noting Iran has no nuclear weapons, navy, air force or money.

The exchange follows a pattern of tension between Trump and California officials, with the governor previously criticizing the president’s policies and the White House defending his statements.
