Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) said on Thursday it will provide roughly Rs 1.2 crore to the family of contract worker Manish Karkada, who died when a fire broke out in the refinery’s Coker Hydrotreater Unit on Wednesday.

The company’s statement outlined Rs 90 lakh as direct financial support, about Rs 10 lakh under its Group Term Life Insurance scheme and Rs 20 lakh from the Workmen Compensation Policy, bringing the total assistance to approximately Rs 1.20 crore.

MRPL also said it is drafting a proposal to extend Mediclaim insurance to contract workers, with consultations involving Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta and the Deputy Commissioner, aiming to finalise the plan within four weeks.

Hundreds of contract workers protested the day after the fire, demanding Rs 1 crore compensation, permanent jobs for a family member and medical insurance for those not covered by the Employees’ State Insurance scheme. Moodbidri MLA Umanatha Kotian attended the protest, and Karkada’s funeral at CSI Amman Memorial Church drew large crowds.
