Rescuers in central Nepal have recovered eight additional bodies Thursday from the site of an avalanche that struck the base camp of the 7,126‑metre Himlung peak early Sunday, raising the confirmed death count to at least 15 expedition workers, Al Jazeera reported.

The victims were Nepali workers who were pitching tents and fixing ropes for upcoming climbs near the Chinese border. Tul Singh Gurung, president of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, told Reuters that the bodies recovered would be flown to Kathmandu by helicopter and that the chances of finding the remaining missing worker were slim.

A team of eleven rescuers, including experienced guides, have been digging through more than four metres of snow that buried the tents. The foreign climbers scheduled for the expedition had not yet arrived at the site when the slide occurred.
