An avalanche that struck the base camp of Nepal’s 7,126‑metre Himlung Peak early on Sunday has killed two guides and left 14 expedition staff missing, rescuers said on Monday. The incident occurred near the Chinese border, burying tents under deep snow. Mountaineer Mingma G Sherpa, who is leading the search, said challenging weather conditions delayed their arrival until the evening. Tul Singh Gurung, president of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, told AFP that two bodies were recovered by 6:00 pm and that the search continues for the 14 missing kitchen staff. Organisers had initially reported at least 10 missing, but the number has risen. The avalanche adds to a series of natural disasters that have struck Nepal in recent weeks, following a devastating glacial flood on 26 August that killed more than 1,400 people.
