Monty Don confirmed on Wednesday that he has filmed the last episode of BBC’s Gardeners’ World at his Herefordshire garden, Longmeadow, ending a 23‑year tenure.
What happened
Don shared an Instagram snap showing the camera crew packing up in the Jewel Garden, captioned “Filming today what will be the very last visit to Longmeadow.” He also posted a picture of his Golden Retriever Ned perched on a stone dome, joking “Balancing act.”
What the reports add
The Standard notes that Don announced his departure last month, describing the decision as “the right time for a change.” He said the current series will be his final one after hosting around 700 programmes. The outlet also reports that garden designer Frances Tophill is being tipped as a possible successor.
What was said
Don told fans, “I am not retiring. I am leaving Gardeners’ World, but I have other projects on the go… I will still be gardening, dog by side, here at Longmeadow.” He added that he looks forward to writing more books and making new programmes for the BBC.
How it came about
Don revealed in April that a knee‑replacement surgery in November had made filming difficult, and he expects another operation in late 2027. Despite the pain, he returned to work three months after the procedure and continued filming until the final episode was wrapped.
