Argentina’s President Milei vows to sue Britain over Falkland oil project

Milei said he would initiate arbitration against the UK if the Sea Lion oil field, operated by Israeli and British firms, continues.

By Felo News Desk · Published

Argentina’s President Javier Milei announced on Monday that he would take the United Kingdom to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea over the Sea Lion oil project, which lies about 220 km from the Falkland Islands. Mile I said the project “illegal sacking of our resources” and that the Argentine government had already filed legal action against it, arguing it breaches a UN resolution that calls for both sides to refrain from unilateral actions in the disputed territory.

In a post on X, Mile I told the world that if the UK does not stop the exploitation within two weeks, he would pursue arbitration. He added that the Sea Lion field is being developed by Israel’s Navitas and Britain’s Rockhopper, who have dismissed the Argentine threat, claiming they hold valid licences issued by the UK.

The British government has defended the companies, saying it has the right to develop natural resources in the area. Meanwhile, Falkland business representatives have been working on a new maritime route between the islands and Punta Arenas, Chile, a project that began before Sea Lion and is aimed at transporting construction materials and fresh produce.

Argentina has long claimed sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, known in Spanish as Las Malvinas, following the 1982 war that left 255 British and 649 Argentine troops dead. The dispute was reignited after US President Donald Trump suggested Washington might review its historically neutral stance on the territory.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to defend the Falklands at the United Nations in New York, stating that the UK would defend the islands against any threats.

Background

The dispute over the Falkland Islands dates back to the 1982 war between Argentina and the UK. Argentina has repeatedly claimed sovereignty over the islands, while the UK maintains that the islands are self‑determined. The Sea Lion project is part of a broader debate over resource exploitation in the disputed waters.

Why it matters

The legal threat could trigger a dispute at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, potentially affecting international maritime law and the future of resource extraction in contested waters.

What happens next

Mile I has said arbitration will be initiated if the UK does not halt the project within two weeks. The UK government has not yet announced a response.
