McDonald’s ends 32‑year FIFA World Cup sponsorship after under‑performing campaign
The fast‑food giant will let its sponsorship agreement, in place since 1994, expire at the end of 2026.

McDonald’s announced on 27 Oct 2026 that it will not renew its 32‑year sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup, letting the agreement that began with the 1994 tournament expire at the end of this year.
Chief financial officer Ian Borden told BizCommunity that, while the campaign generated a lift to the business and “excellent system excitement,” it “underperformed versus our expectations.” He added that the brand must be cautious about the number of “borrowed equities” it promotes, citing examples such as World Cup, Minecraft and the Grinch, and warned that promotional spend alone does not create long‑term value.
The 2026 campaign, created by Wieden+Kennedy New York, was the brand’s biggest World Cup effort and its largest marketing push of the year. It ran in more than 110 countries and featured limited‑edition meals, collectible merchandise and football personalities including David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry and Lamine Yamal.
McDonald’s says the decision is not a retreat from sports or football but part of a broader shift toward its own brand properties, intellectual‑property assets and creator collaborations. The company plans to reassess major sports sponsorships while continuing to invest in other sports‑related partnerships.
Recent controversies surrounding FIFA did not influence the decision, according to the fast‑food brand.
